Beacons Lantern Procession

Every year we try to organise a lantern procession on Parkwood Springs. We provide materials and the help of a local artist so that groups of children and adults can make spectacular lanterns and parade them through the woodland on Parkwood Springs as dusk falls and the lights of the city below are illuminated. In 2018 high winds prevented the parade, but we were still able to show off the lanterns thanks to the help of Christ Church, Pitsmoor. You can find pictures on our Facebook page, which is where we will post more information about this year's event.

This year's Lantern Procession was a great success. Ten groups - both young people and adults - made lanterns over the weeks before the Procession, helped by local artist Patrick Amber.

There were sessions to make lanterns at the Burngreave Cemetery Chapel and open sessions for children at Pitsmoor Adventure Playground, Melrose Road.

Hundreds of people joined in the Procession as it set off at about 5.45pm, led by Sheffield Samba Band. The Procession threaded its way through the trees to the viewpoint as the lights are turned on over the city. There was an amazing sunset! After activities there the Procession returned to the football field as dusk fell, for a lantern-lit finale with the Samba Band.

Thanks again to coffee/tea stall The Bean Rover, and to 'Fancy an Indian' for the Indian street food.

As in previous years there were some incredible lanterns, and the atmosphere was wonderful. It was a really good opportunity for young and old to walk round Parkwood Springs, see the views over the city as the dusk falls, and have a good time together. Earlier years' Beacons Festivals

A number of years since 2007 there has been a spectacular evening of entertainment in October, celebrating the special place that is Parkwood Springs. Storyteller Shonaleigh worked many years with children from local schools to develop a story, to be told on the night with music, acting, and fire. Last year the first Beacons Lantern Procession took place. The entertainment starts in daylight, and as dusk falls finishes in a spectacular display that lights the night sky.

The 2010 event took place on Saturday 23rd October, and attracted a good crowd of local residents and people from further afield. To read the report by the local 'Burngreave Messenger' please click here and to see their photo gallery please click here.

For some beautifully presented stories and images of past Beacons events, visit Shonaleigh's website and discover The Tales of Parkwood Springs.
